Alaska
general information
Those of us that live here in Alaska are very proud of our state, and we love
nothing more than to show it off!! While it is impossible to show you all
there is to do, our hope is that this page will give you push in the right
direction, and help you see Alaska through our eyes.
One of the best places to start planning your Alaskan trip is the Anchorage
Convention and Visitors Bureau. Showing you the in's and out's of our fair
city, this site is a great jumping off point....
Of course skiing and snowboarding are a huge part of how we spend our long
winter months, Alyeska Resort, about an hour's drive south of Anchorage is
one of our premier skiing retreats. Offering hotels, restaurants, hiking
trails and ski runs to accommodate from beginners to experts. Alyeska,
located in Girdwood Alaska has it all!! Now, we realize that there are some
of you out there that find skiing down a groomed run a little on the boring
side... Never fear, for you there is always Valdez Heli-Camps. Located a
mere 7 hours from Anchorage (Depending on how fast you drive!!) Heli-camps
offer sno-cat skiing, and HEli-skiing on some of the most challenging
peaks in North America... Why else would they hold the extreme skiing
championships there every year?
In the summer we fish!!! Our salmon and halibut are known world wide, and we couldn't
be prouder, in fact did you know Humpy's is named after a pink salmon?! There
are a variety of fishing derby's that take place throughout the summer. A couple
you may want to check out are the
Seward salmon derby, and Ship Creek salmon derby. The latter takes place right
in the heart of downtown Anchorage!!
For those of you don't fish, there is still plenty to do... For viewing of land based
wild life, Denali National Park is a must. Bears, caribou, and moose are just some of
the sights you will see. If you would rather view marine wild life, we suggest
Renown Charters out of Seward for some of the best up close and personal
experiences with Orcas and Humpback whales you could ever imagine!!
As far as culture in our great state goes, we defiantly have an abundance!! From our
great pool of local performers, including Colleen Coadic, who has been voted best
songwriter in Anchorage 4 years running, to Nervous Rex, Anchorage's premier
ska band, to D.J. Mike Holiday, our techno guru, and everything in between,
you'll always find great live music... And you will find them playing right
here at Humpy's!!! But wait, there's more!!! We also have our fair share of
concerts that come up from the outside... Lately we've had national acts
such as Alanis Morrisette, Blink 182 and Bela Fleck among others. If you
happen to be an aficionado of the theater, the
Anchorage Concert Association manages to bring up fabulous Broadway shows that
in the past have included Phantom of the opera, Evita, and Tommy just to name a
few... The venue for these shows is right across the street from Humpy's at the
Anchorage Center for the performing arts, and next years line up looks as
promising!!!
These suggestions are just the tip of the ice burg of all the things to do in our
great state... We hope this gives you a glimpse of Alaska, and just a few of the
reasons why we live here!!
